Summer Highs

This summer I have become obsessed with high waisted bottoms and cropped tops. But, let's face it, who hasn't. The 90s are back and I love it!
This outfit is a big favourite of mine but I mainly wear it to lounge around the house imagining I'm in Italy or at the French Riviera. The top is just a black tshirt that I was going to carboot but decided instead to chop in half in order to show off my (nonexistent) abs. The trousers are my chef/clown trousers I picked up at a vintage shop in Reading. They are high waisted and wide legged with a monochrome check, and therefore fabulous.

This outfit is my let's-have-lunch-with-the-girls outfit. Of course it has to be a different group of girls each time... I bought the skirt from ASOS years ago but I feel like it's come into its prime this summer. I've never been to Florida but who cares when it has flamingoes on it - one of the most fabulous animals around (obviously a peacock would be more so). The top is one of those Bardot tops from Topshop that, embarrassingly, appears to be everywhere.

Birthday Girl

21st birthdays are the best. Especially when it's your birthday... And you have a massive party.
I wanted to be a Dolce and Gabbana girl for the day (who doesn't?) but sadly I am but a poor student so I have more of a chance becoming the Prime Minister than affording a D&G two-piece. So I made one using the inspiration.
I had super fun and everyone said they were impressed by my sewing skills, which made me even happier.
The material was a gorgeous cotton in a pale pink with darker pink stripes and small flowers. I felt that was suitably summery...

Studs

I bought this dress a while back from ASOS because I loved the idea of a dress covered in studs, however, they were all stick on so after a couple of wears they started to fall off. Not cool (but should have expected it really). It looked tacky with studs missing so I bought some proper ones with points that pierce the fabric and fold in to secure them from eBay and got to work removing the old and replacing with the new. I got a bit stud-happy and covered the whole of the front panel with them but it looks awesome so its fine.

Back to the 90s

Rummaging through the Vintage Magazine Shop in Soho a few days ago I came across old Vogue Catwalk Supplements from the early 1990s. They are an excellent way to see the trends that were hot and stalking the catwalks for that particular season, and it was such an eye-opener for how cyclical the trends are; metallics, punk, minimalism, colour – all trends that were up-and-about in the 90s as much as they are now.

My favourite look is this pale pink Chanel trouser suit – what I would give to have that now… It provides a modest nod to the (at the time) not so distant 80s by showing you how to power dress, but it’s not as extreme as the past decade. The colour is a style-eternal and the pleating of the trousers is beautifully perfect. And partnered with a crisp white shirt and a matching pink Chanel bow it is an outfit that could be worn in any decade and still look as stylish as Coco herself…

London Fashion Weekend

I think I've found my new favourite designer. This is the beauty of London Fashion Weekend; it gives you to chance to see and feel and try on the luxurious clothes of new designers that are affordable. And touch was definitely the sense of the season as the rails were packed with silk, silk and more silk. And this is where Charlotte Taylor came into it. I have a thing for clothes that look like pajamas because they simultaneously ooze comfort, elegance and ease, so naturally I love Haider Ackermann’s creations for their pajama-like structure and design. Charlotte Taylor, however, is that little bit better because not only are the clothes a lot cheaper but they’re fun with circus-themed patterns and bright, but not garish, colours. The giant penguin silhouettes and the elephants balancing on balls are fabulous designs and will definitely be going on my ‘save-up-to-buy’ list in both the silk shirts and the dresses. Check out her gorgeous clothes here: http://charlottetaylorltd.com/

The London Fashion Weekend also showed an interesting trend in jewellery; the idea of having to look twice. The jewellery was either very fine necklaces, earrings and rings in dark tones of silver and gold, or extremely bold and brash brighter items. But the surprising thing to note was how on closer inspection both types gave off the opposite message to that gathered from the first sweeping looking; the fine jewellery was in the designs of bones and claws and animals feet whereas the more garish costume jewellery were made out of pearls, beads and ribbons- much softer, prettier materials. I think I’ll be going for the more garish jewellery – claws and chicken feet don’t really do it for me…
